TUCKER, GA — A new ordinance banning outdoor pet sales is now in effect in Tucker.

City officials voted to bring Tucker’s code in line with state law, which makes pop-up pet sales illegal. The ordinance prohibits people from selling animals outside through unsanctioned setups, including in parking lots or at unorganized events.

Councilmember Roger Orlando said he has personally rescued dogs that were mistreated and abandoned by people who could no longer care for them and then turned to pop-up sales to find the animals new homes.

“So this helps prevent those types of things, hopefully it lessens overcrowding at the shelters,” Orlando said.

The ordinance allows city workers to help enforce the restrictions already established under state law.

Tucker Mayor Ann Lerner also expressed support for DeKalb County Animal Control and its work addressing shelter overcrowding.

“We’re really grateful for your tireless work, this is easy for us to do but you’re there day in and day out,” Lerner said.

Anyone who violates the ordinance could face a fine of up to $500.
