Massive marijuana shipment intercepted in Georgia before reaching Atlanta

1,800-pound marijuana bust fuels Georgia legalization debate (Butts County Sheriff's Office)

BUTTS COUNTY, GA — Drug agents seized 1,800 pounds of marijuana after a cross-country delivery from California arrived in Georgia.

Officials say the shipment originated in Sacramento, California, where marijuana is legal, and arrived in Butts County outside metro Atlanta.

Authorities say half of the marijuana was headed to Atlanta, while the other half was destined for Orlando before it was intercepted.

The sheriff’s office did not provide details about how the marijuana was intercepted or whether anyone is facing charges.

Butts County Sheriff Gary Long said the illegal black market for marijuana is not going anywhere.
