DUNWOODY, GA — A MARTA bus driver is facing charges after police say he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a tree in Dunwoody on Labor Day.

The bus was traveling on North Shallowford Road when the driver fell asleep and crossed lanes before crashing near Peachford Circle, according to Dunwoody Police Sgt. Michael Cheek.

“The driver of the bus fell asleep at the wheel. The bus then crossed over lanes of travel,” Cheek said.

Two passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash and complained of injuries. The driver suffered visible injuries, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. The driver was taken to the hospital.

The crash also caused damage to several vehicles in a nearby parking lot after the tree fell.

“That tree, after it struck it, fell onto several vehicles causing damage,” Cheek said.

The driver was later charged with failure to maintain lane and distracted driving.

“Nobody should ever drive tired, or drive sleepy or anything like that. Certainly say something to your supervisors or to your bosses,” Cheek said.

The driver now has a court date.
