NEWTON COUNTY, GA — A manhunt is underway in Newton County after a Covington police officer is dragged by a suspect following a traffic stop on Friday.

Police say he was responding to a shoplifting call on Highway 142.

The injured officer was rushed to Grady Hospital. His identity was not released.

The officer was dragged a few hundred yards before he was thrown from the vehicle, according to officials.

The current extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
