Police detectives are looking for the suspect linked to an officer-involved shooting that happened at a Waffle House in DeKalb County.

The shooting happened at the crowded restaurant on Covington Highway in Decatur around 2 a.m.

Police said the suspect quickly spotted an officer near the front door and fired once at him. The officer, working off-duty but in full uniform, pulled his gun and then fired at the suspect.

The suspect ran out the front door, but evidence left behind makes police believe he was shot.

"We have blood stains on the wall right outside the glass door here of the Waffle House. We don't know the extent of his injuries but believe he may be hit by return gunfire by the officer," said DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander.

Police are unclear about why the suspect shot at the officer; one possibility is that he wanted to rob the restaurant, but got startled when he saw the officer.

Police said the officer was not hurt. There were no other reports of injuries.
