TUCKER, GA — Relief is coming for residents in a Tucker neighborhood after the city approved more than $220,000 for emergency repairs to a sinkhole and collapsed pipe.

The issue developed along Windsong Way near Old Stone Mountain Road and is affecting at least five homes.

“I do want to again call this an emergency and urgent request,” Public Works Director Ishri Sankar said.

Sankar says the pipe network had recently been inspected and was considered to be in fair condition before it rapidly deteriorated.

“This network was deemed as fair however it just simply degraded very quickly. Footage that we have does show some of this joint separation, but not nearly to this extent,” Sankar said.

Sankar says heavy rain this summer likely contributed to the sinkhole and pipe collapse. He also pointed to signs of damage around the roadway.

“The curbs cracking and the Earth is raised up beyond the curb, that’s generally not a good sign, that means water is getting in and it really became the roadbed,” Sankar said.

The city approved the funding to make the emergency repairs, with work expected to begin this week.

“We can get boots on the ground by the end of the week to start demoing the site and providing steel plates to get the residents access to their homes,” Sankar said.
