Atlanta State Senator Vincent Fort calls for federal prosecution of a Union City police officer after the fatal shooting of an unarmed teen.
A Fulton County grand jury this week declined to indict Officer Luther Lewis for the December shooting death of 19-year-old Ariston Waiters. Senator Fort tells WSB, he's requesting the intervention of the U.S. Attorney's office in Atlanta.
"Federal law allows for a prosecution based on the denial of a person's civil rights by killing them and we think that's something the U.S. Attorney ought to consider," Fort tells WSB.
Senator Fort participated in a rally last night by supporters of Waiters' family.
"It is a travesty of justice for the grand jury not to indict this officer, but this is not over," he said.
Officer Lewis maintains he struggled with Waiters and the shooting was justified. The coronor concluded Waiters was shot twice in the back.
