LILBURN, GA — The city of Lilburn unveiled a new permanent memorial Friday morning to commemorate the lives lost in the Sept. 11 attacks 25 years ago.

The memorial at Lilburn City Hall features a piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

“This being the 25th anniversary, we felt this was a perfect time to put that piece of steel on display and honor all of those who lost their lives that day,” city Communications Director Rebecca Baumann said.

The memorial gives residents a permanent place to commemorate the attacks at City Hall.

“We thought this was the right time to create a display and have it permanently in Lilburn City Hall,” Baumann said.

A local Lilburn family also created 2,977 origami cranes for the anniversary, representing each person killed in the attacks. Each crane includes the name of one of the victims.

“They have folded 2,977 origami cranes, and written the names of each individual that was killed as part of the attack 25 years ago,” Baumann said.

The cranes are hanging over the memorial at City Hall and will remain on display for the next month.
