ATLANTA — City leaders are making a new push to get an Atlanta neighborhood places on the National Register of Historic Places.

Officials are hoping to get Atlanta’s Mechanicsville neighborhood placed on the list.

Atlanta Preservation Center Executive Director David Mitchell says the national register designation would be beneficial for the community.

“Want to be eligible for some type of tax credits, maybe being able to pursue national park service grants. A number of different things that are otherwise out of reach for this community,” Mitchell said.

Recent applications for the designation have been denied, according to officials.

“I think this is a great way of setting a tone that all of our neighborhoods in Atlanta are unique, not just some of them,” Mitchell said.

He added officials are now pushing members of Congress to appeal to the department.
