SOUTH FULTON — City of South Fulton officials say it’s safe to go outside following a fire at recycling company on Sunday evening.

Clouds of black smoke rose into the air above the city of South Fulton.

Reports from residents on social media say many of them heard a blast or explosion sound before the smoke could be seen.

According to the Fairburn Fire Department, the fire happened at a warehouse in the 5500 block of Mallory Road.

“There’s three businesses inside one structure,” Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Chambers said. “All of them doing various portions of recycling. They have computer parts, and motherboards and things like that, they do recycling and storage.”

Officials say while a toxic hazard has not been identified in the smoke.

Firefighters remain on the scene watching for hotspots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however, the owners of the building say the fire likely started from batteries inside a warehouse there.
