JOHNS CREEK, GA — A Johns Creek man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a fraud scheme that involved impersonating professional athletes, including Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix.

CJ Evins was sentenced to six years in prison without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Prosecutors say the scheme secured nearly $20 million in fraudulent loans by impersonating NFL players and their managers.

Authorities say Evins’ co-defendant, Luther Davis of Roswell, is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Prosecutors say Davis, a former University of Alabama defensive tackle, dressed up as Michael Penix, including wearing a durag, during a video call with investors to request loans.

Other victims identified by prosecutors include Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney and Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku.
