A Georgia institution celebrates a birthday today. It was 66 years ago, on September 5, 1955, that the first Waffle House restaurant opened in Avondale Estates. Good luck trying to guess just how many waffles, cups of coffee, and other menu items were served over the decades at that location and so many others.
The Avondale Estates store now serves as a museum (closed during the pandemic).

Joe Rogers, Sr. and Tom Forkner, neighbors in the community, got together to open that first 24-hour, sit-down restaurant. The Waffle House website says the brand has grown to more than 1,900 locations across 25 states. Of course – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
