GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office is the latest to file a legal challenge against a new state law that makes her position and local offices in five metro Atlanta counties nonpartisan.

District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson says the law unfairly targets these counties and she wants it thrown out.

According to officials, House Bill 369 makes elections nonpartisan in select counties that use a medical examiner instead of an elected coroner. That includes Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett County in metro Atlanta.

“HB-369 is very strange and prejudiced legislation,” Austin-Gatson said.

This is the second legal challenge filed against the law.

Supporters say the measure is designed to take partisanship out of local governments.
