GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A metro Atlanta area police department is launching its drone first responder program which introduces technology to enhance emergency response capabilities.
The Gwinnett County Police Department program is set to allow drones to be launched remotely from automated docking stations at the North and Central Precincts in response to certain emergency calls.
“The drones will be operated by trained personnel in the department’s Situational Awareness and Crime Response Center (SACRC) and can provide a live aerial view of an incident before officers arrive, allowing critical information to be relayed to responding units,” Gwinnett County Police officials said.
The drones will be used for authorized emergency response and public safety incidents, not routine patrols, officials added.
Gwinnett County Commissioners approved $275,000 for two drones from an Arizona-based company in July.
“Drones as First Responders will be deployed to significant traffic accidents, disturbances and in progress crimes. Additionally, we will support public safety teams including fire and emergency services,” Gwinnett County Police Chief James McClure previously said.
The DFR program is another step in the department’s continued efforts to use technology to improve public safety, officials added.
