GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett County commissioners are set to vote Tuesday on whether to accept $1.5 million in federal funding to help combat illegal drug trafficking.
The grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy could be used to intercept major drug shipments and purchase new technology and equipment for drug operations.
The funding could also pay for equipment including drones and portable testing gear used to identify fentanyl.
Up to 5% of the grant can be used for drug prevention and treatment programs.
Gwinnett County is eligible for the federal funding because it is classified as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Other counties across metro Atlanta also have the federal designation.
