ATLANTA — As scorching August temperatures continue across metro Atlanta, Georgia Power says the state’s power grid is prepared to meet increased demand.

Georgia Power President and CEO Kim Greene says customers should be confident in the power supply even as air conditioners work overtime during the summer heat.

“This is what we’re built for and we want to make sure that all of our customers know that they don’t have to worry about being asked to not use electricity, to not use their air conditioner,” Greene said.

Over the past decade, Georgia Power has invested $10 billion in grid reliability technology to prepare for extreme temperatures and keep power services flowing.

“We are assured of being able to meet the hottest days of the summer and the coldest days in the winter,” Greene said.

Greene says the company also builds reserve margins into its load forecast to account for potential issues with equipment.

“We do know that they are mechanical machines and every now and then there might be an issue so that’s why we build reserve margins into our load forecast,” Greene said.

Greene says Georgia Power has been building in the state for decades and pointed to its structure as another factor in meeting customers’ power needs.

“We have been building in Georgia for decades. Our structure is the same as it’s always been and we’ve been protected by that vertically integrated, state regulated business model and it’s working for all of our customers,” Greene said.

Even as energy demand in Georgia grows, Greene says the company is positioned to keep the power flowing during extreme heat and cold.
