Georgia’s top cops hit by ID theft

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is no stranger to fraud cases, but in February, the agency found itself on the victim end of one.

Now, three men have been jailed for stealing the identity of Georgia's top law enforcement agency--and they are suspected of targeting businesses in at least two other states.

"We were first alerted by our bank that there was some potential for fraudulent checks out there, and someone was using our GBI bank account number to conduct this," says GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles. "The checks appeared to be suspicious in nature."

The agency's finance department alerted its investigative division, and agents developed several suspects in their probe after gathering many documents and doing several interviews. They also found more bogus checks drawn on the accounts of other businesses in Georgia, Illinois, and Texas.

Over recent weeks, three suspects have been arrested: Jousha Cannon, 24; Lavante Page, 28; and Eric Stokley, 20. Miles says the men face charges including Forgery in the 3rd Degree, Theft by Taking (felony), ID Fraud (felony), and Negotiating and Executing Fictitious Checks. The men were jailed in Cobb, Fulton, and Henry Counties.

The accused thieves allegedly stole more than $2,900 from the GBI alone.

Miles acknowledges that she's not heard of any cases in which any law enforcement agency--let alone this one--has been victimized by identity thieves.

"I can't say whether or not this is common, but it's definitely a situation that we are going to take seriously," says Miles. "When our own agency is defrauded, it's definitely of high concern, but we work it just as diligently as any other criminal investigation that we would handle."

The continuing investigation now focuses on the metro Atlantan who has allegedly been creating and printing the counterfeit checks. That person's name has not yet been released.
