ATLANTA — Georgia Tech is joining the University of Georgia in eliminating supplemental essay requirements for first-year applicants.

Students applying for admission will still be required to submit a personal essay through the Common App, the online application platform used by more than 1,000 colleges and universities.

Georgia Tech says the change is intended to simplify the application process for students.

The university also says the decision comes as the use of artificial intelligence increases and as both Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia continue to see more applicants.

The change follows similar shifts in standardized testing. The SAT has already eliminated its optional essay section, while the ACT’s optional essay is no longer required by most colleges for admission.
