Georgia is one of eight Southern states sharing more than $44 million in federal funding aimed at better preparing for future natural disasters.

FEMA says the money will be used to redraw flood lines to help protect property owners and change how homes are built near flood-prone areas.

State emergency planners estimate that every federal dollar spent on disaster damage will save $6 in future losses.

Officials have not yet announced which Georgia communities will be included in the project.
