GEORGIA — More than two dozen correctional facilities across Georgia are under lockdown as the Georgia Department of Corrections investigates increased security threat group activity.
State officials say the lockdowns were implemented out of an abundance of caution and will remain in effect until further notice.
“As of the time of this writing, we can confirm that these facilities have been placed on lockdown due to increased Security Threat Group (STG) activity,” the department said in a statement.
The term security threat group is generally used to refer to prison gangs.
The department says security threat assessments will be conducted periodically as investigations continue. Officials have not identified a specific incident that prompted the lockdowns.
During prison lockdowns, inmate movement is typically restricted, while certain services and outside visitation may be suspended.
