ATLANTA — Georgia medical marijuana patients could soon have a new way to receive their products as the state considers allowing deliveries by mail.

The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission is considering a new rule that would establish requirements for delivering medical marijuana products to registered patients, caregivers and health care institutions.

Under the proposed rule, products could be sent by certified mail through the U.S. Postal Service or through shipping companies with tracking and proof of delivery. Only the registered patient, caregiver or health care institution would be allowed to accept the delivery.

The commission is accepting public comments on the proposed rule through Sept. 9 and will hold a public hearing on it and other proposed rules Sept. 16. A vote on the matter is scheduled for Sept. 30.

The proposal comes after Georgia expanded its medical marijuana program last month. The changes removed a THC cap and added eligible medical conditions, including HIV and lupus. The expansion also allows dispensaries to sell medical cannabis in vape form.

Several thousands of new patients have signed up for Georgia’s medical marijuana program since July 1.
