Friends, residents remember Georgia mayor killed in motocross accident

BARTOW COUNTY, Ga — A mayor of a small Georgia city died in a motorcycle accident on Saturday morning, according to officials.

Perry Bell, the mayor of White, Ga, died while competing in an event at the Lazy River Motocross outside of Dalton, according to interim Mayor Gary Crisp.

Bell’s bike collided with another during a stunt, and he died from his injuries, according to officials.

WSB′s Justin Carter spoke with officials who are calling it a freak accident.

“They brought a helicopter in... Flew him to a trauma center but he didn’t make it. He passed away,” Crisp said. Crisp knew Bell for several years.

Crisp said Bell loved the outdoors, playing his guitar and his community. “He was just a caring person for the community and just wanted to help the people who lived here,” Crisp added.

“Everybody is hit hard from it,” Anthony Moss, a resident, said.

It is a small community, and neighbors in White, Georgia, greatly admired their mayor.

Anthony Morris worked with him at City Hall, and said he had just spoken to Bell on Friday. “He’s always got a smile on his face,” Moss said.

Bell had only been mayor for a little over two months. He was sworn in in June.

Government officials said they are unsure what happens next. It is likely that the city will hold a special election to replace him.
