Georgia lawmakers seek GBI investigation into allegations against Stockbridge mayor

Stockbridge mayor ordered back to City Hall as state lawmakers seek GBI investigation

STOCKBRIDGE, GA — Five Georgia lawmakers who represent Stockbridge are asking Gov. Brian Kemp to request an independent GBI investigation into allegations against Mayor Jaden Williams as the city council prepares to consider removing him from office.

Williams faces allegations that include misuse of city money and sexual misconduct. State Sen. Emanuel Jones says an independent investigation is needed to ensure the mayor is treated fairly.

“What I’m concerned about is ensuring that the mayor is treated fairly across the board,” Jones said.

The lawmakers sent a letter to Kemp asking him to request that the GBI investigate the allegations against Williams.

“We’re asking the governor to request that the GBI do a thorough investigation,” Jones said.

Jones says the investigation should be conducted independently of the city.

“Someone on the city’s payroll should not be involved in doing an investigation. This should be independent of the city,” Jones said.

The GBI says it is aware of the lawmakers’ letter but has not been requested to review any specific criminal allegations related to the matter.

Williams is accused of using a city purchasing card to spend $4,000 on donations, along with purchases at local stores and restaurants.

The latest development comes days after the city reached an agreement with Williams restoring his access to his office and other private areas of Stockbridge City Hall. His access had previously been revoked.

Under the agreement, restrictions remain in place on Williams’ use of city purchasing cards, fuel cards and city vehicles.

The Stockbridge City Council is scheduled to meet Saturday morning to consider removing Williams from office.

“We need to clear the air in this city,” Jones said.

Williams, 22, was elected last year and is the city’s youngest mayor.
