ATLANTA — Former U.S. Rep. Ben Jones, who represented Georgia in Congress after becoming known for his role on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” has died.

Jones played Cooter on “The Dukes of Hazzard” in the 1980s before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

He represented Georgia’s 4th Congressional District, which encompasses portions of metro Atlanta, for four years between 1989 and 1993.

Jones’ wife announced his death on social media Sunday afternoon, saying he suffered a massive heart attack while waiting for the Atlanta Braves to play the New York Yankees.

“Ben passed from a massive heart attack. He was resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees,” she wrote.

She went on to say Jones had “the most amazing rich full life” and was loved by many.

Jones was 84.
