DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A DeKalb County grand jury has indicted former DeKalb County School District Superintendent Devon Horton on charges stemming from a domestic violence incident earlier this year.

Horton was indicted on three counts, including aggravated assault. Prosecutors allege he grabbed his wife’s throat and shoved her in front of the couple’s two young children.

Horton was arrested in January. During a virtual bond hearing following his arrest, his wife, Christiane Horton, asked the court to release him.

“Even in the moment that things were escalating I was never fearful for my life, my children were never in danger,” Christiane Horton said.

She also told the court she did not believe her husband was a violent person.

“I believe that it just came to a bubble. He’s not a violent person,” she said.

Christiane Horton said she believed the incident stemmed from stress related to the federal charges her husband is facing from his time leading a school district in Illinois.

“Just knowing who he is, I know he’s very remorseful and that this would never happen again, it has never happened period,” she said.

The federal case alleges tax fraud and embezzlement and led to Horton’s resignation after about two-and-a-half years as superintendent of the DeKalb County School District.

Horton is scheduled to be arraigned on the DeKalb County charges in September. His federal trial is scheduled for October.
