ATLANTA — After a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on gerrymandering, a federal appeals court has ordered a judge to review his decision invalidating Georgia’s 2021 voting maps.

WSB Senior Legal Analyst Ron Carlson says the plaintiffs will face an uphill battle.

“Have to prove that the lawmakers or at least some of them, important ones of them were moved by racial analysts who draw the map in the way they did,” Carlson said.

Carlson said proving lawmakers were motivated by race when the maps were drawn will be difficult.

“It’s going to be a difficult burden of proof,” Carlson said.

He expects the dispute to eventually make its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The decision will not have any impact on the maps being used for this year’s November midterm elections.
