NEWNAN, GA — Attorneys for the family of a teenager killed by police in Georgia announced plans to file a $75 million wrongful death lawsuit.
Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump announced the lawsuit in the deadly shooting of 18-year-old Zadarious Dorsey by Newnan Police in October.
Investigators say Dorsey had a gun and refused to drop it when he was shot by Newnan police.
According to preliminary information from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), officers attempted to speak with the driver of a vehicle when Dorsey and several others ran away.
The GBI says an officer attempted to use a Taser on Dorsey. Investigators say the officer then shot Dorsey after he pulled out a gun and ignored verbal commands to drop the weapon.
Crump and Harry Daniels, who represented Dorsey’s family, say he was not armed and was not suspected of any crime. Crump and Daniels previously said the shooting has raised serious questions about police use of force and sparked outrage in the community.
Officials say a gun was found 42 feet away from the place where Dorsey was fatally shot.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is continuing their investigation into the deadly shooting.
