COWETA COUNTY, GA — The family of an 18-year-old shot and killed by a Newnan police officer earlier this month has hired two national civil rights attorneys as they seek answers about his death and consider filing a lawsuit.

Attorneys Ben Crump and Harry Daniels are now representing the family of Zadarious Dorsey, who was killed during an encounter with police in Coweta County.

The attorneys say Dorsey was unarmed when he was shot and was not the subject of the initial traffic stop. They also claim video evidence shows he did not have a weapon.

According to preliminary information from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), officers attempted to speak with the driver of a vehicle when Dorsey and several others ran away.

The GBI says an officer attempted to use a Taser on Dorsey, but it was unsuccessful.

Investigators say the officer then shot Dorsey after he pulled out a gun and ignored verbal commands to drop the weapon.

The family’s attorneys dispute that account, maintaining that Dorsey was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

Crump and Daniels say the shooting has raised serious questions about police use of force and sparked outrage in the community.

Dorsey’s family is considering pursuing a civil lawsuit as it continues seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
