ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback for their Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The decision comes after an intense training camp competition with Michel Penix Jr.
Tagovailoa was selected No. 5 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. He led the Alabama Crimson Tide to a national championship in January 2018 against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Tagovailoa finished his Dolphins tenure with a 44-32 record. He is a left-handed quarterback who also poses a threat as a mobile quarterback.
The Falcons are set to travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium for the season opener at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13.
