ATLANTA — Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is taking over gates previously occupied by Spirit Airlines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport following the discount carrier’s shutdown earlier this year.

The Atlanta City Council has approved Delta’s takeover of Spirit’s former gate space, including gates C-4 and C-6.

According to bankruptcy court documents, Delta paid Spirit a one-time fee of $12 million for the lease of the gates. The agreement is set to expire in June 2031.

Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy and officially ceased operations in May after more than two decades of flying into and out of Atlanta’s airport.

The airline attributed its shutdown to rising jet fuel prices and other increasing costs amid the conflict with Iran.

Delta’s takeover comes as several other gates at Hartsfield-Jackson remain closed as part of a major project to widen Concourse D.
