Day Two traffic still slow but better on Ga.-400

A day after the change along Georgia 400 confused plenty of drivers, Tuesday seemed to be slightly better.  But it was still worse than normal.

Some commuters complained of trip times of over an hour heading from Forsyth and north Fulton Counties toward I-285 and Atlanta Monday. It was the start of GDOT's plan to use the right shoulder of the southbound lanes as a merging lane between Holcomb Bridge Road and the North Springs MARTA Station.

The confusion came when drivers reached the Northridge exit and did not know they had to merge back into traffic.

Tuesday some of that confusion was addressed with large signs pointing commuters back into the flow of traffic. There were also barrels along the road, helping to outline where commuters were allowed and where they could not venture.

But Tuesday's trip times continued to be well above normal down Ga.-400, but it seems some of the moves made by the DOT, along with drivers' familiarity with the new routes, helped.

"They probably need to do a little better education when it comes to merging off of the Northridge exit," said one caller to WSB.  Another said drivers needed to be better educated as to what they need to do when they get to that exit.

Overall, the DOT considered the first day successful, saying the only problems were with confusion and not the plan itself.

Goldberg says it was the first day of something new, so it will take time for drivers to get better adjusted to the merging lane.  But as a whole, she says traffic did move and surface streets leading to Ga. 400 were less congested than usual.
