COVINGTON, GA — The Georgia Bureau has arrested and charged a former metro Atlanta police officer after he was accused of misusing a license plate reader system.

GBI officials say Covington Police Department Officer Michael Canty, 29, was charged with Misuse of a License Plate Reader System and one count of Violation of Oath of Office.

Earlier this month, the Covington Police Department requested the GBI to investigate allegations of misuse of the Covington Police Department Flock Safety System.

“Preliminary information indicates that Canty accessed the Flock Safety System for non-law enforcement purposes,” GBI officials said.

Canty was arrested on Wednesday and was booked into the Newton County Jail. He was later fired, officials said.

This marks the fifth arrest the GBI has made in the past week for police officers accused of misusing flock cameras.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
