Man shot by police after holding woman, child at gunpoint

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A Lithonia man has died after being shot by a DeKalb County police officer during a domestic incident early Tuesday morning.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department, officers responded to a home on Central Drive near North Hairston Road in unincorporated Stone Mountain around 8:03 a.m.

When officers arrived, they encountered an armed man identified as Donquez Thomas, 26, holding a woman and a child at gunpoint. Police say officers repeatedly instructed Thomas to put down his weapon, but he refused to comply.

During the encounter, an officer fired their weapon, striking the suspect.

Thomas was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries where he died hours later.

Authorities say the woman and child were safely removed from the scene, and no other injuries were reported.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Thomas’ body will be taken to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
