DEKALB COUNTY, GA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who police say suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound during a foot chase with a DeKalb County police officer.

Police say an officer investigating a reported armed carjacking in the area of Lancashire Circle spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one involved.

As the officer approached the vehicle, a man inside, later identified as Vermontay Burch of Stone Mountain, got out and ran toward a nearby apartment complex on Eagle Springs Way.

The officer chased Burch on foot and deployed a Taser, striking him. Shortly afterward, the officer reported hearing a gunshot.

Police immediately began lifesaving efforts, but Burch was pronounced dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say the officer used nonlethal force during the encounter.

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine Burch’s exact cause of death.

The GBI was called in to lead the investigation because of the officer’s use of force.
