9-1-1 Calls Provide More Details Leading to Hood Arrest

Police released a series of 9-1-1 calls Tuesday establishing a kidnapping, the police shooting and a carjacking leading to the hostage standoff in Athens involving accused cop killer Jamie Hood.

The first call to a dispatcher came from a witness.  “I just saw a guy jump out of the trunk of a Cadillac. He was tied up with his hands tied. He jumped out of the car,” a witness told the 911 dispatcher.

The second call came from victim Jadon Brooks.  "I would like to report a kidnapping, carjacking and an armed robbery,” Brooks said. “Luckily, I just got out of the boot of the car. He hid me in the boot of the car," he said.

Other calls describe the chaos that unfolded following the shooting of Officers Tony Howard and Elmer "Buddy" Christian.

New information also came to light Tuesday surrounding Hood's activities during the hostage standoff in Athens.

Vernon Keenan, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, says Hood gained entry into the apartment when a teenage girl left to start the family car.

Hood, who is charged with the murder of Christian, was hiding in the woods near the apartment when he saw the 13-year-old open the door and walk out to the car.

Keenan says Hood surprised the girl and entered the apartment, taking 10 people hostage.  One of them was able to escape, leaving Hood inside the duplex with the others.

According to the GBI director, Hood was using cocaine and watching television as police surrounded the building.

The hostage standoff ended hours later when Hood surrendered on live TV.

As the handcuffed Hood was being transported into custody, cameras captured him saying, "I regret killing that officer."  When asked to elaborate, Hood said, "That innocent officer.  I regret that ..."  He also said, "You know, they killed my brother. They were going to kill me."

Hood, 33, is also charged with wounding Howard.  He was shot twice last Tuesday, and has since been released from the hospital.  Howard is now recuperating at home with his family.

Hood has waived an initial court appearance.  He is also now a suspect in the December 28 murder of an Athens employee, Kenneth Wray.
