Braves on the cusp of first in the NL East

Post All-Star break, the Braves are back at it with winning baseball. By the end of Sunday, the defending champs could be in sole possession of first place in the National League East.

Consecutive wins over the Angels at Truist Park (8-1 Friday, 7-2 Saturday) coupled with two straight Mets’ losses to the Padres, has the Braves only a half-game back of New York in the division.

Consider Atlanta was 10 ½ games behind the Mets entering play June 2nd. But since the beginning of June until now, the Braves have reeled-off 35 wins in 46 games. Entering play Sunday, Atlanta is a season-best 20 games over .500, at 58-38.

Individual standout performances have been many in this stretch. Just to name a couple: Third baseman Austin Riley is on a 15-game hitting streak since July 5th. During that time, he leads the majors in hits (27), home runs (8), and extra-base hits (13).

Pitcher Kyle Wright (12-4) is now the NL leader in wins. He owns a 2.95 ERA, with 115 strikeouts in 116 innings.

Coming off a championship season and playing great baseball is keeping the turnstiles moving at Truist Park. Saturday night’s attendance of 42,827 was the fifth-largest regular-season crowd at the ballpark, representing the 26th sellout of 2022.

The Braves go for the sweep of the Angels Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m.
