ATLANTA — A woman arrested in connection with the death of a 4-year-old boy in southwest Atlanta is facing additional charges after the Fulton County Medical Examiner ruled the child’s death a homicide.
Atlanta police say 32-year-old Jasmaine Smoak is now charged with murder and aggravated assault, in addition to previous charges of cruelty to children and concealing a death.
The medical examiner determined that the boy, identified as Colby Cooks, died from blunt force injuries.
Police discovered the child’s body inside a southwest Atlanta home earlier this week.
Investigators believe Smoak left the home with three other children and traveled to Wilkes County in east Georgia.
Authorities used license plate reader technology to track Smoak to Washington, Georgia, where she was taken into custody.
One of the three children found with Smoak had severe injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Smoak is reportedly a friend of the mother of at least two of the children.
Police say Smoak also faces a charge of second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the 4-year-old’s death.
