Austell man denied bond in deadly hit-and-run involving pedestrian

131 Maxham Road embankment

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA — An Austell man has been denied bond after being charged in a deadly hit-and-run involving a pedestrian earlier this month.

Police say 40-year-old Juan Gutierrez struck a man who was lying in the roadway on Maxham Road and then left the scene.

The victim, identified as 45-year-old Robenson Bien, was in the roadway after he had already been struck by another vehicle while attempting to cross Maxham Road on Aug. 2.

Police say Gutierrez then struck Bien a second time. Bien was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gutierrez was arrested more than two weeks after the crash and is charged with vehicular homicide and hit-and-run.

A Douglas County judge denied Gutierrez bond, and he remains in the Douglas County Jail.

It is unclear whether the driver who initially struck Bien is facing charges.
