Cobb County police have 26-year-old Danzell Mitchell in custody as they search for another person of interest in an attempted kidnapping at Town Center Mall in Kennesaw on Tuesday evening.
Mitchell is being held without bond in the Cobb County Detention Center on a host of charges for holding a knife on an 11-year-old in the food court bathroom and trying to kidnap the girl.
The incident happened around dinner time, about 6:30pm. The girl asking to go to the restroom while the family was eating. Her dad getting up to walk her to the facilities. She told police she went in and didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. However when she came out the stall, she says a man grabbed her and held a knife to her. She screamed and was able to get away and ran to her father. Shortly thereafter, police say Mitchell came out of the women’s restroom. The child recognized him and the girl’s father along with two other mall patrons chased him, tackled him and held him until authorities arrived.
Police were able to recover the knife said Deputy Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer. When asked to describe it he said “the knife was not something that someone would commonly have in their pocket.”
Asked if Sex Trafficking is a motive in this crime VanHoozer said he’s not sure “This is an unusual case. I don’t know if that was the motive here, but it’s possibly one of them.”
Authorities are currently searching for a woman described as thin, with an olive complexion who was wearing a pink shirt. VanHoozer said the father of the victim saw Mitchell and this woman communicating as Mitchell was being held waiting for authorities.
Police are also asking anyone who took video of the incident to call them as they continue their investigation.
