ATLANTA — Atlanta City Council members are expected to vote Monday on a resolution supporting a $3.5 billion light-rail proposal that could bring trains to the Atlanta Beltline.

The proposal follows three years of study and calls for three interconnected routes, including a 22-mile loop, as well as northern and southern routes.

Under the plan, trains could run every 10 minutes beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing past midnight. The system is estimated to provide 4.2 million rides each year.

The proposed rail lines are estimated to cost $3.5 billion. Another $1 billion would be needed for new MARTA stations.

Some Beltline users have raised concerns about how adding train tracks could affect space used for walking, running and cycling.

Funding and engineering plans still need to be finalized before construction could begin.

The city has opened a 90-day public comment period on the proposal, with feedback being accepted through Nov. 3.
