CANTON, GA — An 18-year-old mother is now facing charges in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son earlier this month.

Canton police say Devorah Diaz Perez is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree cruelty to children and three counts of reckless conduct.

The charges come after officers responded to a home on Aug. 4 for a report of an unresponsive child. The 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Police say the child had bruises across his body, including one that resembled a shoe print. Investigators also reported a fresh open laceration on the top of his head.

The mother’s live-in boyfriend was arrested and charged on Aug. 4 following the child’s death.

Diaz Perez is being held without bond.
