ATLANTA — One person in Georgia has died from West Nile virus as health officials report multiple human cases across the state.

The Georgia Department of Public Health says eight human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in the state so far this year, and that number is expected to increase.

Mosquito traps have also tested positive for the virus in multiple counties, including Fulton and DeKalb.

Mosquito season typically lasts through October. Health officials are urging Georgians to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
