A former high school bookkeeper who bought a plasma TV with money stolen from the school has pleaded guilty.
Shirlene Benton apologized in court for stealing funds meant for students.
"I just plead to the court to please forgive me for this horrendous mistake," said Benton.
The former Stephenson High School bookkeeper said she was very sorry for stealing more than $12,000 from the school.
"I am so remorseful for what I've done. I have never did anything like this before in my life," said Benton.
The state recommended that Benton be sentenced to 10 years to serve six months in custody.
DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James tells Channel 2 Action News emphasized that she took money meant for children.
"And every time someone uses money that's meant for children to enrich themselves with a plasma television it makes me angry," said James.
Benton has returned the TV and other items bought with the stolen money.
She has until December 4th, to turn herself in.
