It looks like Clayton County voters will have another option besides voting for an indicted sheriff on Election Day.

But the man who will run as a write-in candidate against Victor Hill says he will not bring up the 37 count indictment against the former sheriff.

“I think that the people have heard enough of that,” Chief Deputy Garland Watkins told Channel 2 Action News. “Now it’s time to let the judicial process take its course and we move forward.”

Watkins says he will submit his name as a write-in candidate on Tuesday.

Watkins was one of the employees fired by Hill during the first week of his term as sheriff four years ago. He was later rehired after the courts got involved.

But Watkins says the campaign is not personal.

“I think it will be a monumental feat (to win),” said Watkins. “But the beautiful thing is a lot of people know me in this county.”

Hill's trial is set for November 26th. He is facing charges from his previous term in office that include racketeering and witness tampering.

If he wins in November and is still under indictment on January 1st, the Governor could suspend his deputies as sheriff until the trial ends.
