The Sandy Springs babysitter charged with murdering the 5-month-old boy she was watching is nowhere to be found.

Police are wondering if Caris Ayala fled the country when she was supposed to be interviewed by police.

Ayala was looking after Angel Pantoja at her Sandy Springs apartment Oct. 5. She called 9-1-1 and said the child was “unresponsive,” police said. The baby was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite with a severe brain injury.

While the child was in critical condition, a social worker interviewed the baby’s parents at Ayala. The babysitter did speak to detectives, but said she had to get a lawyer whenever police wanted to talk to her again.

“At that time, an attorney contacted detectives and made arrangements for Ayala to re-interview, however she never showed at her attorney’s office on the day of the interview,” Rose said in an emailed statement. “She has not been seen nor heard from since that time.”

The child was taken off life support Friday night, police said.

Police think Ayala is on the run with her husband, Noe Castillo-Ramirez, and the couple’s 7-month-old baby. Authorities will also charge Castillo-Ramirez with hindering the apprehension of a felon when he is caught.

Sandy Springs police have warned border control officials since the couple has ties to El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

“They could be held up somewhere,” Rose said.

Ayala was last seen in a black Toyota T-100 truck with Georgia tag BKM9384.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Ayala is urged to contact Sandy Springs Detective Sandy Rose at 770-551-3313 or Detective Mike Bailey at 770-551-3308. Anonymous tipsters can also contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
