Arrest warrants issued in landfill theft

Illegal activity at the Willow Oak Landfill in Palmetto ends with arrest warrants and over a million dollars in theft.

The Palmetto Police Department got a complaint involving a worker at the landfill. In the complaint scale operator, Earnest Martin was named as taking money and gifts from certain drivers and company owners in exchange for changing the weight of trucks as the enter the scales.

Willow Oaks Landfill is owned and operated by Waste Management.It is estimated the loss due to Martin's actions is around $1,097,820.00. Martin is said to have received about $65,000.00 in money and gifts from individuals and company owners.

In the investigation police say several businesses were mentioned that were involved in the illegal activity. Several arrest warrants have been issued and police say more are expected.  Charges include theft by deception, theft of services and theft by conversion, all of them are felonies.

Waste Management says the activity went on for at least two years and the investigation is still open and active.
