1st Day of School: Bus Fire!

Authorities in Henry County say a school bus caught fire Monday morning while picking up students for the first day of classes.

Henry Fire Captain Sabrina Puckett says flames broke out in the engine when the bus stopped at a subdivision on Mitchells Ridge Drive.

School bus driver John Wilkins tells Channel Two Action News when he first saw smoke coming from the hood, he told everyone to get off the bus.

"They got off.  They moved back as far as they could move," said Wilkins.

Wilkins and 22 students were onboard.  Puckett says no one was hurt.

Neighbor Roselyn Antwi says the bus was engulfed in flames after about five minutes.

"You could hear glass shattering, things popping and that's what worried me with the kids standing so close to the bus," said Antwi.

Officials say the students on the bus were from Austin Road Middle and Stockbridge High schools.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
