Friday Update:
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Winter Storm Watch for northeast Georgia, however I do anticipate an extension in some form of winter weather alert for Metro Atlanta through this weekend.
I’ve personally almost gotten caught on I-285 during the January 2011 Snowstorm, so now I am more conservative in my “stay off the road” timeline. Your timeline may differ depending on where you are located and where you are going, but I would “be in place” by Sunday morning.
The short term, “higher resolution” models are now coming into view, so I am using the NAM to illustrate my thoughts as of Friday morning for the Sunday situation.
Quite frankly, it is hard to describe “everyone’s” forecast in a short amount of time, and it’s going to vary depending on where you are located in Metro Atlanta (Gwinnett County vs Cobb County vs Clayton County).
Wintry Mix is expected to change over to all snow through Sunday afternoon.
The timing of the freezing rain is dependent on the strength of “The Wedge”, which is expected to be in place on Sunday morning.
Anything that falls on Sunday evening will be frozen in place through Monday morning, as temperatures drop into the upper 20s through sunrise Monday.
In addition, a northwest wind will gust as high as 15-25 mph, sending wind chills into the 10s and 20s through Monday morning.
