A warm, humid and windy day is on tap for Metro Atlanta today!
Temperatures will climb into the mid 70s this afternoon as winds gust as high as 35 to 40 mph. This may be strong enough to knock down a few tree branches and power lines through this afternoon.
Below is additional information from the National Weather Service.
The windy conditions are courtesy of a pressure gradient setting up over the eastern half of the United States. In the Midwest, a 985 millibar low will swirl into the Great Lakes. Meanwhile, a 1018 millibar high is located east of Florida. Air flows from high pressure to low pressure -- but instead of a straight line, it curves along the way due to the Earth’s spin, known as the Coriolis Force.
As a result, a strong pressure gradient force will develop, where air will quickly flow from Florida to the Great Lakes, and we will feel it as it flows through Georgia in the form of 30-40 mph wind gusts. Due to the Coriolis Force, the air will bend and flow from the southwest, pulling warm and humid air into the Southeast. Temperatures will warm into the mid 70s for Metro Atlanta on Monday.
