Sizzling heat continues for the first week of Summer

Dry air in place will allow temperatures to climb into the upper 90s this week.

After a week of hot and humid temperatures, expect another week with temperatures in the upper 90s.

Thankfully, this week will feature dry air (as opposed to last week’s downright tropical airmass), but hot is hot, no matter the moisture content!

High pressure has settled in over the Southeast, and it will park over the South through the next several days.

Thankfully, humidity will stay low this week, as an upper level ridge will force dry air south from Canada into the Southeast.

High pressure means air is sinking towards the ground -- sinking air compresses against the ground, causing the air to heat up.

Thankfully, the dry air in place will prevent heat index values from climbing above 105 degrees this week, even as air temperatures climb into the upper 90s to 100 degrees.

Late-June Heat Wave Not Uncommon for Metro Atlanta

The First Day of Summer is Tuesday, June 21, and it will sure feel like summer all week long!

Thermometers have reached the upper 90s and even triple digits before in late-June, as recently as 2016 and as far back as 1914. In fact, here are the record daily highs for this week in Atlanta:

  • Monday, June 20: 98 degrees (1933)
  • Tuesday, June 21: 98 degrees (1933)
  • Wednesday, June 22: 98 degrees (1964)
  • Thursday, June 23: 99 degrees (1944)
  • Friday, June 24: 99 degrees (1988)
  • Saturday, June 25: 100 degrees (2016)
  • Sunday, June 26: 100 degrees (1914)

Heat Safety Tips

It’s important to mind heat safety rules this week!

Be sure to hydrate often, wear loose clothing, stay in the shade, and take frequent breaks when working outside. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke -- heat stroke is a life-threatening situation that can cause death or permanent disability of not treated immediately.
